21.5" x 16.5"
This is one of my personal favorite designs. It contains some very creative techniques, resulting in this realistic
piece. I took some creative license with the title. There is no actual prickly pear cactus in this quilt.
It depicts a 'pair' of cactus. Occasionally someone will point out the spelling or botanical 'error' to me, and we both
get a good laugh out of it!
The three major techniques in this quilt are ‘thread drawing’ as
described in Twilight Transition and Desert Storm ~ I used this technique to create the delicate little 'globe mallow
wildflower' that is front and center on the design. My unique approach to bobbin work creates the realistic representation
of the 'ridges' on the Organ Pipe cactus on the right.
And the ocotillo cactus on the left side of the
quilt is created entirely from fibers - I have come up with a really, really simple method for couching fibers! I
can arrange and stitch this cactus in 2 simple steps that only take about 30 minutes! It looks really complex,
but you'll be amazed at the simplicity of the process.
As with all my patterns, each technique is clearly instructed
and illustrated to help you get going. None of them are difficult, but some seem a little intimidating – don’t
be afraid – you’re in good hands! I’ve taught these techniques to literally thousands of students,
and no one has ever failed my class yet! So be brave and step into the world of embellishments – you’ll
be glad you did!
